I'm trying to set up a 3com SuperStack 3 24 port switch (3300 series). I would like to set up the web interface. From reading the manual I gather I need 2 things to do this.

1)A compatible '9 pin d type connector' 2)I must be running 'serial line interface protocol (slip)' using the included 'serial web utility' I'm having some trouble with this. First the cable, is it just a serial cable or do I need something special, will I need special hard ware in my computer? Also the slip utility included says its for win95/98, is their a new version or can I use that version (I'm running winXP pro and win2K). Is there a way to turn on the web interface without the cable/slip utility?

Ok, I got the cable in the mail the other day and I figured out what slip is (I thought it was a program from 3com not a protocol). But I still can get my computer to connect to the switch's web interface (it works as a switch but I want to be able to access the advanced features). I set up a direct network connection over com2, 'dialed' the hardware I used to have on that port, switched the protocol to slip and tried to connect. I get an error saying the host computer (eg the switch) is either already connected to another device or unable to connect. Did I set something up wrong; miss a step? Could the switch be damaged (unlikely it was sealed in its original package when I got it)? Should I sell it on ebay and buy an easer one to work with?

Please any help would be appreciated. 1) connect to the switch with a null modem cable over a serial port 2) use a terminal emulator program directly to a COM port to access 3COM text based configuration menus 3) find the IP configuration menu and assign an IP address, SM and GW to the switch; consult the manual on the layout of the menus to find the IP configuration options 4) disconnect the serial interface, you'll probably never use it again 5) using a Web browser connect to the IP address you've just assigned to the switch That's all there is to it.
